Author's Interview

Q. What is the Pardner's Trust series of books?
A. They are modern day, true to life cowboy books. Ricky Richardson is no drug store cowboy but an honest to goodness young married man with a job to do. He must show up to work with a horse to ride but the only horse in his price range is a good horse gone bad because of mistreatment. It is a story of trust, love, redemption and...yes, even a little romance.

Q. Is it a fantasy?
A. Not in the traditional sense of the word, it is a true to life, coming of age story, but if you've ever dreamed of owning and loving a horse, you will be carried away into your make believe world of horses and cows, cowboys and sheriffs.

Q. How did you come to write a series of western books?
A. I grew up in a ranching family so the subject matter was easy to come by. I also grew up reading Louis LAmour, Jack Schaefer, Elmer Kelton and Larry McMurtry. One of the highest compliments I have ever received was that my writing reminded the reader of Jack Schaefer.

Q. How many books in the series are out?
A. I currently have two books in the series out. Pardner's Trust and Friends in Deed. The third book in the series is scheduled for a Fall 2015 release and number four in Spring of 2016.

Q. Do the books have to be read in order?
A. No. Each is a stand alone with the same core characters.

Q. Are those characters modeled after people you know?
A. I heard Craig Johnson quote Wallace Stegner that the greatest fraud perpetrated on the reading public is the statement at the beginning of each novel that states that this is a work of fiction and that any similarity to persons living or dead. I'll leave it at that.

Q. We understand the books are clean with no explicit bedroom scenes or violence. Is that correct.
A. That is absolutely correct. No sex or violence. I don't think a good cowboy book needs that.

I very much enjoyed this book. I have been an avid reader my entire life, and I know a good book when I see it. Typically when I read a Western, there are always gun battles and beautiful women to be swept off their feet.

They are fun stories, but utterly unrealistic and you can feel the cliche's dripping off the pages when you read them.

They are what I call, "dessert books". Fun, but with little substance.

With Cowboy Up, this author really got rid of any Western cliche. This is a novel that I would call a "main course" novel. He brought to life a realistic loving relationship between a man and his wife, and the bond that can develop between a person and a horse. Too many "cowboy's" think that they have to drink, party, and carry on to live up to the image of a cowboy.

The author shows what a real cowboy looks like. He shows the hard work, the dust, the cold and heat, and the little moments that make it all worth it. This is a book to savor and enjoy.

Not to mention the fact that it is family friendly. You don't find many books like that anymore. I would recommend.
