The Taste of Custard

by Kim Farnell

The Taste of Custard Kindle Edition.

William is young, unemployed and bored. Life in seventeenth century London is not well-suited to him, nor he to it.

But after Mr Flowers falls into a swoon at the serving of a custard, William’s destiny is revealed: a quest for perfection. In custard. Should William succeed, he can lay claim to Mr Flowers’ fortune.

William desires not only to save his father from the debtor’s bench, but also to fill his empty days and the hole in his heart left by the departure of his beloved friend, Ferdinando. Most of what William has so far learnt in life is from books, so this is where he begins. It soon becomes clear that an ability to boil mice is of limited use. The story of William’s quest is one of astrology and alchemy, cooking and hairdressing, and of young men with exotic tastes in dress. But most of all, it is the story of custard.

( 4.8*) It was such a fun read from the beginning to the end! Perfect character devolopment ! I can't tell you how amazing Kim Farrell mastered to describe all the details from a 17th century point of view. And be warned.. you will be hungry while reading this book haha especially if you are a dessert addict like me! The story is about William, who is in the quest of finding the recipe to bake the perfect custard. He has no knowledge or whatever about custard and this is why it is interesting to see his progress throughout the book.

A lot of inspiring themes are addressed in this novel : family, friends, life philosophy, patience and perseverance. The reason why I didn't give a staight 5 stars is because it lacks that big plot twist in the end ( my subjective rating system) . But it was REALLY REALLY close to being a perfect book. The author also includes some quotes about custard from different recipe books, which makes the reading experience a lot better since you can take a break and appreciate the whole history behind custard.

Thank you to Kim Farrell for providing me a free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
