Stage play, Drama, Gay & Lesbian - Boy with Beer

What do you do if your lover won't let you make love to him, continues seeing his girlfriend, and thinks HIV/AIDS is a white man's disease?

That's the problem faced by gay, upwardly-mobile photographer, Karl, as he tries to uncover the finer feelings of coarse, young raver, Donovan, who is initially only after a quick shag on the side without his girlfriend finding out.

Donovan comes across as cocky, confident, and streetwise at first, but this only masks a mass of conflicting desires and insecurities that leave him unable to hook-up with other guys without quite a few beers, a lot of bravado, and a small bottle of poppers that he carries around with him.

One wonders up until this point why Karl, as the slightly older and much wiser man, puts up with the beer boy's bad attitude until we learn of Karl's desire to find common ground with his fantasy "African Prince." So intense is this passion that he's even prepared to consider the roguish charm of a streetwise hustler.

But even handsome frogs can be turned into handsome princes in this turbulent and hilarious two-hander, and we follow a good deal of Donovan and Karl's personal dynamics in the everyday process towards building a relationship.

Will they or won't they? That is the question in this boy meets boy tale, and with every twist and turn, you'll be hoping and praying that love really can conquer all.

I first read "Boy with Beer" by Paul Boakye in a Methuen Drama Anthology. It was my favorite of the five plays by British dramatists, so I'm delighted to find it in a Kindle edition.

There's a new introduction by the author too and the drama between his central characters is as fresh as ever. I laughed-out-loud so many times that it was almost like being locked in a room with Donovan and Karl as a fly on the wall.

At some points, I even blushed. The dialogue is snappy, sexy, and very real. Wonderful.
