"One of the most intelligent novels about science I have ever read" Tom McCarthy, Man Booker shortlisted author

"Intelligent, thought-provoking and profoundly moving" Byte the Book

The Human Script is the debut novel by Johnny Rich. Described by one reviewer as a "philosophical thriller but so much more", it is the story of a troubled young man, working as geneticist who faces grief, love and ultimately an unexpected victimisation.

Through a compelling story, a treasury of ideas is explored: nature and nurture; faith and science; art and celebrity; and, in the end, the very nature of fiction.

"A novel which is gripping, bursting with ideas and evidently written by a skilled story-teller" Bookemstevo

Already an established non-fiction writer, The Human Script is Johnny Rich's first novel and has been causing a stir among the UK's literary elite. As a graduate of the world-famous MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, Rich's writing attracted praise from the likes of poet laureate Andrew Motion, Booker Prize-winner Ian McEwan and W G Sebald.

The novel begins:
"In the beginning, Chris Putnam believed. Believed in God. God on a cloud with his father’s frown. Then Chris Putnam believed God was without form and, eventually, void. Then Chris Putnam believed in science. And then he believed in freedom.

None of this is important, however, because no one believes in belief anymore, not in these days of knowledge. Besides, belief in freedom is only another way of saying belief in uncertainty. So Chris Putnam thought perhaps he believed in uncertainty.

Uncertainty is the scientist’s domain. Belief is not. Scientists build knowledge on what they cannot show to be doubtful, not on what they show to be certain.

One thing, however, is certain in life. No one survives it. Nevertheless, in the meantime, for Chris, the future was uncertain.

Although, by the end of that day, the never-ending chain of events would have begun to challenge his uncertainty."
