Literary Fiction / Where We Belong

by Courtney Carola
(Milville, New Jersey, USA)

Hello all! I'm Courtney Carola and I'm a twenty year old self published indie author (that's a mouthful).

"Where We Belong" is my debut novella, published in April of this year. The story revolves around two friends, Francesca, who is dying of cancer, and her best friend Delilah, who is oblivious of her friend's recent diagnosis - she only has six months to live. Francesca decides to keep the news from Delilah and instead prompts her to go on a road trip to Los Angeles, which Delilah reluctantly agrees to. On their trip to the City of Angels, the two girls meet three guys who change their lives, and they manage to change theirs as well.

Interested? How about a little blurb from the story?

Delilah sighed, crossing her arms across her chest, not looking the least bit pleased. “And I can’t believe that I’m saying this but if I leave you alone here and you get murdered, I’ll never forgive myself,” she grumbled.
Francesca’s lips curled into a smile, knowing that Delilah was going along with all of this still. “So you’re staying?”
“I’m not happy about it at all.” Delilah told her.
Feeling giddy, Francesca had to resist the urge to jump up and down, and hug her. “But you love me.” she insisted.
“I barely tolerate you half the time.” Delilah replied.
“You totally love me.” Francesca grinned.
The glare had never Delilah’s face for a second. “If you didn’t have cancer, I’d push you down the stairs.”
Francesca threw her arms around Delilah’s neck, pulling her in for a tight hug. “I don’t blame you.”
Delilah didn’t return the hug, just stood there stiffly. “I hate you,” she said simply.
“But…” Francesca pulled away from her and raised her eyebrows at her. “But?”
Delilah put her hand on the doorknob. “If they try to kill us in our sleep, I’m blaming you.” she said and then opened the door. Feeling rather pleased with herself and more happier than words could say, Francesca followed her back inside, a wide smile on her face. The boys turned their heads in their direction as they reentered the apartment, patiently awaiting their decision. Heaving a heavy sigh, Delilah said, “We would really appreciate it if you would let us stay here for a couple of days.” Francesca nodded in agreement with a smile.
“It’s cool with us,” Paul said. “The only thing is we only have three bedrooms.”
“But you’re welcome to share with one of us,” Scott joked.
Delilah laughed a fake laugh along with the rest of them, and then put her arm possessively around Francesca’s shoulders, her face going stoic as she said, “We’ll sleep on the couch.”
