Historical Fiction: Loyal To A Degree
by Horst Christian
About The Book:
Loyal To A Degree is based on a true story about a young German boy during World War II and the events that took place in his life leading up to the fall of Berlin.
Karl Veth is only 14 years old and as mandated by law, a member of the Hitler Youth. He is the assistant to the commander of KLV camp in Poland where over 120 boys under the age of 12 were evacuated to keep them safe from daily air raids on Berlin. As the Soviet Army breaches the German defense lines, Karl is put in command of transporting the boys from the camp back to their families in Berlin.
Once Karl reaches Berlin, he receives orders to assist SS Commandos in navigating the subway tunnels throughout the city.
Karl's loyalty begins to waver as he witnesses death and destruction all around him and in the end, he must make a critical decision - live or die fighting.
About The Author:
My name is Horst Christian and I wrote Loyal To A Degree based on my own experiences in the days before the fall of Berlin during World War II. When asked by a friend what prompted me to write this story now, so many years later, I told him I has several reasons. The most significant being that of all the books written about World War II, none were written from the perspective of a 14 year old German boy who was drafted to fight for a cause he could not understand.
Most of the boys my age at the time did not survive the war and many died at the hands of the SS. I felt that by writing the book, I could finally give a voice to those who perished and the few that survived.
