James is a thirty-year-old Guyanese of biracial descent. He is disappointed about his love life, has grown tired of the role of a ladies man ("sweet boy" in Guyanese parlance), and now wants to mend his ways by entering a committed relationship with a woman who could stimulate his intellect as well as his feelings.

James blames himself for his unhappy love affairs and blames the women in his life for not being quite right for him. Most of the women he dated weren't different from him regarding their ultimate desire for pleasure and self-gratification. Many of his girlfriends he met at discos. During the summer he had given discos a rest until in the autumn, a friend encouraged him to visit a recently opened disco that offered great sounds. James was excessively fond of music.

One Friday night James decides to attend the new disco and, as if from habit, he finds himself striking up a friendship with a woman who is a thirty-three-year-old Swedish journalist, who works for a left-wing magazine. She is also a staunch feminist. The woman's no-nonsense disposition suggests that James would have to put much effort in the relationship if his desire for a meaningful and sustaining friendship is to succeed.

James earns his living as a hospital porter, is an aspiring writer of literary fiction and writes articles for a bi-monthly community newsletter in London, on cultural, social and political issues that are related to black foreigners in Sweden.

This tale takes place in the era of "Make Love, Not War" - of "Free Love". Perhaps it is not your typical love story, for it is one of mild romance and discreet love scenes. The action of the tale rests upon the thoughts and behaviour of the two main characters.

This masterfully written book is a thought- and emotion-provoking work of art from beginning to end. The author does an amazing job of developing the characters and giving us a sense of the time and world in which they live (Sweden in the 1970s), as well as creating a palpable tension between the “love birds” throughout the work. As a student of human thought and behavior myself, I found the complexity of the main character to be simultaneously intriguing, funny, and heart-wrenching.

You get to see his motivations and thoughts in a very realistic, honest, and relatable way—both the good and the bad (and sometimes even the ugly). And though the story does follow the lines of a traditional love story (boy and girl meet, something keeps them apart, finally they get together), the characters and situations are refreshingly non-traditional and unique. This is a true gem of a read from an independent author, and I wholly recommend it if you are looking for something that goes a little deeper while still being an enjoyable Sunday-afternoon read. It will make you smile!
