Driftwood is a hidden gem when it comes to sports books, fantastic read!

Jack Driftwood is heading into his 18th year as linebacker for the Buffalo Blizzard of the North American Football Association (NAFA). Buffalo has not been to the playoffs since his rookie year, but things are looking up as Steven Stark, their top draft pick, under Jack’s tutelage, is expected to help change their fortunes.

The Blizzard's 93-year old owner, Gerald Wainscott III, has brought his daughter, Gerry, into the fold to take over the team after he passes. The team's GM, Donald Fegel, has his eyes on taking her and the team for himself, but Driftwood may have something to say about that. Intense battles ensue, both on and off the field, as Buffalo makes a run at the Mega Bowl title.

Jack Driftwood is an experienced linebacker for the Buffalo Blizzard of the North American Football Association (NAFA). As he approaches the end of his professional career, his major role is to groom the young prospect Steven Stark.

But things are not looking good for Jack and the team. His speed isn’t the same and many are questioning if he’s still useful for the team, in spite of the trust deposited on him by Howard Ivy, the veteran head coach. The team’s owner, Gerald Wainscott III, 93 years old, is looking forward to keep the team’s administration in the hands of the family.
It’s a transitional moment for the traditional team, and as such, turbulent.

The future of the team rests on the older generation being able to teach the new leads how to conduct business, both in the athletic sense (Jack’s job) and in the managerial sense (Wainscott’s job). During transitions the presence of profiteers are to be expected, and often they are hard to spot. Such is the case of Donald Fegel. Despite his merits, his methods are questionable. He ascended from being a locker room attendant to general manager not only through hard work and talent, but also thanks to morally grey tactics.

Now he wants Driftwood out of the team, and tries to undermine the head coach’s authority whenever he can. He plans on approaching Wainscott daughter, the heir to the kingdom, and take control of the team. He is ruthless, and his unethical methods begin to escalate. Will he be able to take the team over and destroy Driftwood’s career?

Ray Bentley obviously knows a lot about football’s backstage. The described situations and the dialogue are very authentic and the level of detail is astounding.

The world of professional football can definitely spark curiosity, there are some particularities that I find remarkable, such as the fact that an athlete who had multiple knee surgeries, broken ribs and other lesions, still might have more stamina in the playing field than a younger player in perfect fitness, due to the extreme contact involved in the game and its unpredictability, a debilitating injury might affect any players, regardless of their general physical condition. I was able to learn a lot about football and to see the sport in a new light.

At nearly 600 pages, the book surprisingly doesn’t drag on, it’s actually a page-turner. Highly recommended to those that enjoy sports stories and political intrigues. 5/5 stars!
