Welcome to North Harbor High…where a girl can get bullied to death.
Sheridan Alexander moves to her fifth foster home since kindergarten. Her two goals are to graduate and exit the system without any more trouble. That is until she is assigned locker 572 and finds the abandoned journal of Ribbon Barber.
The journal pages reveal the endless insults and abuse flung at an innocent girl. “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.” Yeah, right. Words of hate scar forever. Sheridan needs to find Ribbon and protect her before it’s too late even if it means giving up her most stable home in years. Ribbon has a right to be left alone.

I read this book as part of my review of appropriate materials for my work in statewide suicide prevention. I asked my colleagues, staff and college aged children to do the same.
We all aged that this was a riveting, well written book, presented in the "kids vernacular" so that youth can easily relate to this book. It was thoroughly researched and used correct, sensitive language that will not be offensive to those of us who have loss loved ones to suicide.
Schools and colleges should include this book as part of their curriculum. Colleges should include the book as a resource for education majors. I plan to use it as a resource in a graduate course I teach on suicide prevention. The addition of a teachers manual to help enhance its eduacational value and long lasting impact on safe messaging, suicide prevention and anti-bullying would be my only suggestion.
L.T. Kodzo was born the year J. F. K. was assassinated. Throughout the late 70's and early 80's she spent her adolescence balancing great relationships with teachers and grades, while making self-destructive decisions outside of the classroom. As a mother of two beautiful young girls, her writing speaks to the value of every person. She writes with the belief that fiction can heal. She highlights this idea on her website "RealIssues-NovelAnswers.com."
