When our intrepid fox first visits the garden at the back of a terraced house looking for food, she decides to venture further, winding up inside the house. In the living room she comes upon the Black Cat and the Tabby Cat, the two feline residents, who give her a rather unwelcome reception.
Undaunted, Maggie keeps returning to the garden and the house and each time she has to contend with the two cats. The Black Cat is always ready to chase after her but the Tabby Cat quite likes the idea of having the fox around, although he can’t bring himself to admit as much to his feline chum.

Brazilian born author Yara Evans now lives in the UK where she has been involved as an academic researcher. Now she devotes her time to writing fiction, especially fiction based on the animals she loves. This is her debut book and is based on the antics of real-life foxes that have visited her back garden in East London. The two cats that figure in the story are also based on the two felines that she has looked after for many years. The illustrations that accompany the story are by artist Luciana Betti.
We meet Maggie the Fox as she sneaks into yards for food at night. `Maggie has visited this garden for years, a garden at the back of a terraced house in East London. So, you see, Maggie is an urban fox.' The adventures begin when Maggie ventures into the house and is confronted by Black Cat and Tabby Cat who live there. An unknown visitor Maggie soon diverts their attention with a mouse ploy, but Maggie visits again and fins Taby to be friendly but Black Cat is cautious and inhospitable. Tricks occur and gradually the three get to know each other's idiosyncrasies. Instead of a cat and mouse game, these three play a cat and fox game until Maggie suggests that they all share the garden and after a bout of sickness turns the Black Cat and the Tabby Cat into her unlikely helpers.
The story is well written, shares the life of animals and their thoughts and compares those to humans - not always in a positive manner. The story is a bit long for little children, could use more illustrations, but then is directed for ages 6 - 12 years and for that age group it will surely appeal!
Yara Evans was born in São Paulo, Brazil, but has lived in the UK for many, many years. She has spent most of her working life there as an academic researcher and has only now embarked on the 'fun-road' to writing fiction, launching the first title of the series The Adventures of an Urban Fox, "Maggie Arrives" in the Spring of 2015. The stories about this friendly red fox are based on the antics of real-life foxes that have visited Yara's back garden in London (England) for several years now, including Maggie, her favourite fox that has visited for the longest time.
The two cats that figure in the story are also based on the two felines that Yara has looked after for many years, Sombra (black) and Curioso (tabby), which are the latest on a very long line of animals that she has looked after throughout her life. Yara will have more titles in this series out very soon. Meanwhile, she hopes you'll enjoy "Maggie Arrives".
