Children's Books: The Legend of the Icelandic Yule Lads

The Legend of the Yule Lads is well-known among Icelanders. The country’s rich history of legends and folktales featuring a host of mystical creatures is reflected in this unique Christmas tale about trolls.

After centuries of retelling, the characters are still an enduring part of Icelandic holiday celebrations.

Heidi Herman Author and Speaker
This modernized version of the Icelandic Yule Lad tale brings new life to this very old story. After accidentally being seen by a human, Sheep Cote Clod finds he must rely on a young Shepherd boy to keep his secret.

He gives a gift just to protect his troll reputation, but the little boy’s happiness made him happy as well. He learns that one of the greatest gifts you can receive is the joy in giving to someone else.

One by one, the Yule Lads each take a break from his own mischief, and each one learns the happiness gained from giftgiving. Even from a source as unlikely as a troll, a selfish act wrapped up in the Christmas spirit can grow into something wonderful.

Author Bio

Heidi Herman
is a native of Illinois with a proud Scandinavian heritage and close ties to Iceland. Her mother is a native of Iceland, who met and married a US serviceman who was stationed in Reykjavik during WWII. Heidi grew up with stories of brave fishermen, mischievous trolls and adventurous Vikings.

Her mother, Ieda, published her memoirs in the winter of 2012, Trolls-Monster Worm-Hidden People, Fond Memories of Iceland. Inspired by her mother's memoirs, Heidi was again immersed in childhood memories of legend, lore and imaginative stories. She was captivated by one of the folk legends recounted in her mother's book. The troll-like characters sparked the imagination of many and led to Heidi writing her first book, Legend of the Icelandic Yule Lads.
