Action Adventure: The Journey
by Christina Berta
(Jeddah, Saudi Arabia)
Sometimes something happens out of the blue that is a total life changer. In the intriguing new novel The Journey, 10 people from different walks of life are united by a single event, causing each to think about his own life’s journey and what could have been done differently.
Set in Brussels, Belgium, this thought-provoking encounter between strangers will have far-reaching effects. The characters include a Turkish snack bar owner looking for a purpose in life; a poor pensioner; a European Commission trainee; a factory employee having health problems; a Polish cleaning lady; a Thai cook; a woman trying to balance work and family; a juvenile wanting to turn away from crime; a retired security guard; and a rollerblade enthusiast who has suffered a tragedy.
Faced with maintaining the status quo or recounting their innermost thoughts for total strangers to scrutinize, what will these people decide to do? What would you do?
A freelance journalist and translator, Christina Berta recently relocated to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Born in London, she spent six months in Paris and six months in Milan as part of her university studies. After beginning her career in London, she transferred to Budapest, and then to Brussels. Having lived 12 years in Belgium, “I felt that I owed it to myself – and to my daughters, who were born and brought up in this cosmopolitan place – to create a legacy based on my observations.” Her next book will be about life in the Middle East.
